There are so many great things about National Hispanic Month. It’s a chance to celebrate the rich culture and history that Latin people have brought to the US! Gala Foods is a Latino grocery store that empowers customers through delicious whole foods, fresh produce, fresh herbs and a great selection of latin ingredients at affordable prices. Here are some of our top selections from Abuela’s kitchen in South America and Central America.

Empanadas

Nothing like a delicious fresh masa empanada filled with your favorite fillings. Empanadas are a type of turnover consisting of dough that is stuffed with a variety of different fillings, including meats, cheeses, vegetables, and fruits. Latin America shares many commonalities when it comes to their empanada recipes, including the use of cornmeal-based doughs and fillings that often reflect the local cuisine. Depending on the region, empanadas can be baked or fried.

Arroz con Pollo

This is a very popular dish in Latin America and there are many different ways to make it. Arroz con pollo literally means “rice with chicken” and typically consists of white rice, chicken, vegetables, and seasonings. It can be made in a variety of ways, including with saffron-infused rice, peas, hot sauces, and other spices.

Tamales

Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of masa or dough that is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf. The dough is usually made from scratch, but there are also many pre-made mixes available at our  Latin grocery stores. Tamales can be filled with a variety of different ingredients, including meats, cheeses (oaxaca cheese is extremely  popular), vegetables, and even fruits.

Caldo de Res

This is a delicious hearty beef soup that is popular in many Latin American countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Caldo de res typically contains beef, potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic. It is often served with rice, avocados, and lime wedges.

Arepas

Queso fresco is the  perfect filling for these delicious cornmeal cakes. Arepas are made from precooked cornmeal and water, and can be grilled, baked, or fried. Once they’re cooked, they’re split open and filled with a variety of different ingredients, including meats, cheeses, vegetables, and sauces. Many people use sour cream as a dipping sauce for arepas, but there are also many other great options, including hot sauces, salsa verde, and guacamole.
